New Mexico Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Santa Fe, NM. If you are building a driveway, a parking pad or a shed base, the material underneath is base course.

This is high country ground, and the northern basins below the Sangre de Cristo carry sandy clay alluvium with caliche. What you put on top of that decides how the surface holds up.

Materials for Santa Fe Projects

Base course is the compacted layer under a drive, a parking pad or a slab. New Mexico yards also call it Type I base course, Type II base course or 3/4 minus.

Order Base Course when you are building the structure of a drive or pad. For topping an existing drive on a long rural approach, Driveway Gravel goes down over a compacted base.

For paths, patios and courtyards, crusher fines are the local answer. This is screened crushed rock fines that pack to a firm walkable crust, and yards sell it by color.

See Crusher Fines for a xeriscape walkway, a dog run or a courtyard surface. Stone Screenings bed pavers and flagstone and fill the joints between them.

Washed stone and drainage

Water off steep slopes and shallow soil arrives faster than the ground will take it once the surface has crusted. Drainage stone gives it somewhere to go.

Drain Rock goes into French drains, dry wells and foundation drains, and it takes the splash off a canale or a downspout. 3/4 Crushed Rock works in drainage beds and drip strips against a foundation.

For finer work, 3/8" Crushed Stone handles pipe bedding and a topping course over compacted base course. Numbered sizes are specification language here, so #57, #67 and #89 stone read as written on a plan.

Sand, soil and decorative stone

Mason sand, listed around here as plaster sand, is for block, brick and adobe work, stucco and plaster coats, and paver joints. Washed sand beds and levels flatwork under slabs.

Topsoil and garden soil go over thin alkaline ground and caliche. Fill dirt raises grade and backfills before a base course lift goes down.

For decorative beds, borders and dry arroyo landscaping, Natural Pea Gravel and Rio Grande river rock cover ground and drain. Large river rock builds dry creek beds and heavier erosion work.

Ground and Conditions in Santa Fe

Snowmelt comes off the high country in spring, then monsoon cloudbursts run off steep slopes and shallow soil. Water moves faster than Stone Screenings and tuff will take it once the surface has crusted.

That is the reasoning behind a drainage layer and a compacted base on any drive or pad here. Where water has nowhere to go, it works at the edge of the surface instead.

Erosion follows the same pattern. Steep slope runoff, arroyo and acequia bank scour after storms, and heavy post fire runoff off burn scars in the Sangre de Cristo and the Santa Fe watershed all move material.

Rip rap armor arroyo banks, culvert outlets and slope faces against flash flow. Large river rock does similar duty in a dry creek bed or a drainage swale.

The working season runs roughly late spring through October. Frozen ground stops compaction all winter, and the high valleys thaw last.

Freezing is hard here. Frost depth runs about 24 inches around Santa Fe, and the local building official sets footing depth.

What access does the truck need at my Santa Fe address?

A clear, level spot the truck can reach and tip in, with nothing parked in the way and no low branches or wires over the approach. If the drop is behind a gate, tell us the width when you order. Soft ground after rain is the usual reason a delivery in Santa Fe has to be moved, so point out anywhere the truck should not drive.
