A flagstone patio needs its finish material to stay in place, particularly where monsoon runoff can move loose aggregate across a property. #89 Crushed Stone has angular crushed pieces and fines that settle tightly when compacted. That makes it useful as a flagstone setting material, between pavers, or in concrete mixes needing a close-fitting aggregate.
Caliche hardpan can send water sideways during a storm, so grade the prepared area to shed runoff before hardscape materials are installed. Keep loose stone away from an arroyo flow line rather than relying on it to handle moving water. Once the supporting area is prepared, place #89 Crushed Stone where the hardscape calls for it and compact it to form a firm finish.
