Loose crusher run tightens by 10-15% when compacted. If you order only for the measured depth, the finished base can end up half an inch short. This calculator has a +10% allowance turned on for that reason. In New Mexico, it may be called Crusher Fines, breeze, decomposed granite, or 2 inch minus on some tickets. These names describe crushed stone with fines retained, about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, which compacts into a surface that tires do not easily displace.

Calculate for compacted depth

  1. Find the footprint in feet. Multiply lane length by width, or measure the pad dimensions.
  2. Enter the required finished compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 for truck areas.
  3. Divide cubic feet by 27 for yards, then multiply by 1.5 to get tons. Leave the +10% selected. Material specs describe the layer after rolling.
Tons = (Area sq ft × Compacted depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.5 × 1.10

Best uses and limits

  • Driveway base uses 4-6 inches when compacted, followed by 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the driving surface.
  • For an economical rural lane, crusher run by itself forms a drivable surface. Plan on dust during summer and regrading every 2-4 years.
  • Paver and slab bases need 4 inches, compacted in 2-inch lifts. The Paver Base Calculator covers the entire paver stack.
  • For shed and hot-tub pads, place 4 inches over stripped ground or 6 on soft soil.
  • Do not use it in a French drain. Its fines create the lock-up but also retain water. Use clean #57 or drain rock where drainage is needed.

Example calculation: a 20 x 10 parking pad

Start with 200 square feet and a 4-inch compacted layer: 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. Order 4 tons to cover the allowance. Place one half, compact it, then add and compact the second half. Building in two 2-inch lifts instead of one 4-inch layer helps the base last for years. A plate compactor rental for the afternoon costs less than fixing the first pothole. Grade the surface so monsoon water sheds away.

Delivery guidance

  • Get the base and surface stone on one delivery to keep work on schedule. Delivery is free either way.
  • Start at the far end, then spread back toward the pile. On large pads, downhill work can save a full day over spreading uphill.
  • Lightly mist every lift before compaction. Wet crusher run binds tighter than dry material.
  • Save a wheelbarrow-load for later. Road crews use this material for pothole repairs, and it can be useful for your own patches.

How pricing works

Crusher run is made from crusher output, not washed and sorted stone, so it is often a lower-cost structural option. On a 4-ton order, the +10% allowance can help avoid another half-ton delivery. See the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, review Road Base too, and order both driveway layers together for free delivery.

Crusher run, Crusher Fines, breeze, and decomposed granite: common questions

How much crusher run is required for a driveway?
Start with the lane area and a compacted 4-6 inches depth. Use 1.5 tons per yard, then add 10%. A 50 x 10 ft lane finished at 4 inches takes about 10 tons delivered.
What is the weight of a yard of crusher run?
Roughly 3,000 lb or 1.5 tons, with a little more weight after rain. Fines occupy the gaps between stones, adding weight compared with clean gravel.
How are crusher run and gravel different?
Crusher run includes stone dust, while products such as #57 are screened clean. The dust creates a hard-compacting base. Clean stone remains open for drainage and loose surface use. Use both in that sequence for a driveway.
Are crush and run and crusher run the same?
Yes. Crush and run is a regional term. Crusher Fines, breeze, decomposed granite, and 2 inch minus fall within the same material family. Any of these names orders the same blend.
Can crusher run serve as the final surface?
Yes, on rural or low-traffic drives. It compacts into a firm crust that holds up in weather. Expect dust during dry periods and regrading every few years. Adding 2 inches of #57 later addresses both.
How much will crusher run compact?
Compaction is typically Ten to fifteen percent. A loose 4-inch layer compacts to about 3.5 inches. That is why the calculator starts with its allowance on and specifications use compacted depth.
