When monsoon rain hits caliche hardpan, water can run sideways rather than soak in, so drainage fill has to be placed with the route of runoff in mind. Drain Rock consists of clean, washed aggregate without fines or dust occupying the spaces between pieces. This leaves room for collected water to travel in retaining-wall backfill, French drains, and septic field drainage areas. The goal is to move water away from the work before it collects there.
Keep New Mexico drainage stone away from an arroyo flow line, since loose aggregate can be carried off during a storm. For a wall drainage section that will be covered by backfill, use the angular variety to help maintain open space under the weight above it. Rounded Drain Rock is appropriate for visible drainage details with a natural stone appearance. This approach is useful where runoff from hardpan needs to be directed away from walls and other below-ground work.

Common Uses
French Drain Fill
For a French drain, drain rock creates open channels that move water out of low spots and away from foundations and basement areas. In New Mexico, set the grade so monsoon runoff drains away rather than toward the structure.
Septic System Drainage
Drain rock forms the permeable layer used in septic leach fields and drain fields. Its uniform, clean pieces allow wastewater to infiltrate as required by health department specifications.
Backfill for Retaining Walls
Water collecting behind a retaining wall can build hydrostatic pressure and contribute to failure. Drain rock behind the wall gives that water a clear route out, helping maintain the wall's stability.
Foundation Drainage
Set drain rock around a building's foundation perimeter to carry groundwater clear of footings and basement walls. Keeping water moving away helps reduce moisture intrusion and hydrostatic pressure, both of which can contribute to cracks and damage to the structure.
Why Choose Drain Rock
Open Water Flow
Because fines and dust are washed away, drain rock leaves open gaps that let water pass through. These spaces help drainage systems carry water freely when monsoon runoff needs a place to go.
Holds Its Shape Under Load
Because drain rock is angular, it can retain open spaces when bearing weight. This reduces the settling and compaction that can restrict flow in rounded aggregate.
Washed and Graded
Washed, graded drain rock is suited to engineered drainage work and works alongside perforated pipe, drainage fabric, and related system materials.
Structural Protection
Drain rock provides a route for water to drain clear of retaining walls, foundations, and nearby structures. This can limit the wet conditions and pressure in the soil that may result in costly repairs.
