Everything You Need to Know About Railroad Ballast

Large angular crushed stone

A work pad or access route can fail quickly when monsoon runoff crosses the area instead of moving away from it. Caliche hardpan can send water sideways, and an arroyo may shift loose rock during a hard storm. Railroad Ballast is best kept out of the flow line and used where the base can remain protected from moving runoff.

For rail track, a heavy equipment pad, or an access road, Railroad Ballast provides an angular foundation that carries load while staying free draining. Grade the surrounding base to shed water before it reaches the stone, particularly in areas near the Rio Grande Valley or along the I twenty five corridor where runoff needs a clear route. Use this material in the supporting layer; choose a finer compactable material when the planned surface needs to bind together.
