There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard of mulch, the same volume as exactly 13.5 garden-center bags holding 2 cubic feet each. That conversion is the main purpose of this page. Add your bed dimensions and selected depth below to see the bulk cubic-yard amount along with its bag equivalent, making the store trip easier to compare. Shredded hardwood is light at around 600 lb per yard, so mulch is purchased by volume and bulk delivery concerns volume, not weight.

Figure mulch for your beds

  1. In feet, measure each bed and total the results. For a round bed, take its diameter, then select circle mode for the area.
  2. For topping an older mulch layer, select 2 inches. Use 3 inches for fresh or uncovered beds. Roots can begin losing air when mulch exceeds 4 inches.
  3. Your answer is shown in both formats: cubic yards for a bulk purchase and 13.5 bags per yard to compare store bags.
Cubic yards = (Bed area sq ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Bags (2 cu ft) = cubic yards × 13.5

Bulk and bags: comparing costs

Ten bags marks the break point. Under that amount, bags can be handy. Once you go above it, bulk is typically less expensive in most places, and free delivery takes truck rental out of the equation. If you are considering 15 bags, compare the totals before loading up. Have one tarp ready for any material left from one yard.

Mulch depths for plant care

  • After raking loose last year's mulch, add 2 inches over that existing layer.
  • Use 3 inches where soil is bare. It helps stop weeds from sprouting and keeps moisture in the ground through July.
  • Leave a clear space of 3 to 6 inches between mulch and the tree trunk. Bark can rot when mulch touches it, and rodents may shelter there. Keep the mulch level in a donut shape, not heaped like a volcano.
  • Do not exceed 4 inches in any area. A deep, wet mulch layer can deprive roots of air.
  • For play surfaces, install playground-certified chip rather than landscape shred, with at least 6 inches of depth.

Selecting mulch types

The calculator starts with shredded hardwood, which locks together and is less likely to shift on light slopes. Chips and nuggets may last a season or two longer, but monsoon rain can float them away or spread them around. Dyed mulch retains its color while decomposing more slowly. Every option uses identical volume math, so material type changes the appearance and refresh schedule, not the amount ordered.

On delivery day

A three-yard mulch pile is roughly small-car sized. Set aside driveway space about the size of a parking spot, place a tarp down, and have the load tipped there because shredded mulch can stain new concrete. Get it spread within a week or two, since a pile sitting for a month can heat up and turn sour inside. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes of wheelbarrow work for each yard, and save the final half-yard for those beds behind the garage.

Common mulch math questions

How many mulch bags make a cubic yard?
Since 27 cubic feet make up 1 yard, use the bag label volume to calculate the amount needed: 13.5 bags when each holds 2 cubic feet, or 9 bags when each holds 3 cubic feet.
What is the cubic-foot volume of a yard of mulch?
27. No matter what fills it, a cubic yard measures 3 x 3 x 3 feet.
How much shredded mulch is needed?
Multiply the bed area in square feet by depth in feet, then divide the result by 27. For beds totaling Two hundred square feet with a 3 inches depth, the result is 1.9 cubic yards, so plan on 25 bags. The calculator above can combine several beds.
What area will one yard of mulch cover?
At a depth of 3 inches, it covers 108 square feet; at 2 inches, it covers 162 square feet.
What does one yard of mulch weigh?
Mulch weighs around 400 to 800 lb based on its type and moisture level. Dry shredded hardwood is usually 500 to 600 lb. Since it is lightweight, available volume rather than weight limits the load.
What is the price of a yard of mulch?
Visit the Shredded Mulch page for the current per-yard price, with delivery free either way. A yard usually costs less than 10 to 12 store bags and provides the equivalent of 13.5 bags of material.
Will mulch bring in termites?
Termites are not drawn to mulch from far away, but a thick damp layer against the foundation can provide cover for termites already in the soil to investigate. Leave mulch 6 inches from siding, keep it below the slab line, and maintain a 2 to 3 inch depth near the house.
Can fresh mulch go over old mulch?
Yes, when the existing layer is loose and less than 2 inches deep. Rake it to loosen the surface, then add enough to reach a total depth of 2 to 3 inches. Remove old mulch before adding more when it is matted or fungal.
