Everything You Need to Know About RipRap
Size and Grading
- Size
- 4 inches to 12 inches and up

Caliche hardpan can send New Mexico monsoon runoff sideways across the ground, leaving an arroyo edge or drainage route exposed when flow gathers. RipRap fits the areas that take that moving water, such as a channel side, slope, shoreline, or culvert exit. It gives exposed soil a heavy stone armoring layer where ordinary gravel may be carried away.
Keep loose rock away from the active flow line, then place RipRap along the bank or route that needs protection from the water. Grading the surrounding base to shed water can help direct runoff toward the protected area rather than letting it spread across bare ground. This approach is useful near arroyo-side work and other drainage paths where storm flow can change quickly. A shoreline with water working against bare soil can need the same protection when runoff concentrates there.
